Birthday of Devi
The Karthika star falling in the month of
Vrishchikam (November / December) is celebrated
as Devi's birthday. Great festivities on
Karthika, Rohini, Makayiram days are customary.
They are held under the auspices of the
Cochin Devaswom Board. Worshipping Devi
on Karthika "Karthika Thozhal" is well known.
People come to reside in this temple in
advance with this end in view. Mudiyettu
a folk dance-drama of great religious fervour,
is performed once in a year at Kizhukkavu.
It is traditionally acted by Kurup. The
theme is based on the encounter between
Kali or Bhadra and Darika, a demon. After
a terrible and long battle Devi kills the
demon by cutting off his head. It is enacted
outside the temple compound and Guruthy
is not conduced that night. |
